Though it was surrounded by farmland and towns and roads, a king long ago had declared it his personal property, and jealously denied it to all the people who relied on it. The villages that surrounded it were forbidden from taking wood for their fires, from hunting or fishing for food, or any of the other carefully managed industries that relied on the trees and animals of Sherwood. The spring after the king made his decree, he came to the forest and spent a week hunting deer before returning to his castle in London. Though the royal family never returned to Sherwood Forest, they continued to outlaw all use of the place by others. Over the years, it grew…
