An argument, three failures, and what the failures leave The conclusion at the end of this shouldn’t be accepted on its own. Stated flat, it sounds like a shrug: whether a preference is really yours is not a question you can answer, and the harder it presses the less answerable it gets. Said cold, that reads as defeatism with a philosophy degree. The reason to believe it is an argument in Part III, and that argument needs no biography. So why the failures? Because the argument is easy to state and nearly impossible to see, and three careful probes had to die before the thing they had in common was visible. The sequence isn’t evidence — it’s teaching. Pedagogy needs no reliable narrator: it needs probes presented at full strength and killed by valid arguments, and both of those are on the page, checkable by someone who believes nothing about my week.
