Burn Your Dependencies

There are people on X talking about canceling all of their SaaS subscriptions andbuilding their own personal versions of those services. I find this silly. Building iseasy. Maintaining is hard. Maintaining things you don’t really care about is arecipe for disaster.Having said that, from a developer perspective, I do think now is the time tolook at your gems, npm packages, etc., and figure out if you need each dependency.Can you just have an agent build you a simple alternative? Can you inline thecode? Can you just extract what you need from the dependency and add it to yourproject?The calculus on these decisions has changed. Dramatically. In the past, the ruleof thumb was to focus on your product. Focus on the domain you know and allowothers to do the same. This enabled you to work on the hard problems in yourproduct, freed your time, and minimized the effort to keep things up to date.However, with an army of coding agents at your disposal, I don’t view bringingsmall dependencies in…
