#4093: Ice Terror Mr. Freeze

ICE TERROR MR. FREEZE BATMAN & ROBIN (KENNER) When the first Batman movie came out in 1989, they just had the one villain, but by Returns, they’d decided they needed to up the stakes with two, which was kept for Forever. By the time of Batman & Robin, it was apparently just not frantic enough, so they upped it to three villains, all of them classically unrelated. In a movie featuring Bane, a tall, imposing, muscular villain with a notable accent, Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as Mr Freeze, which is the obvious, undisputed set-up, right? Arnold as the cryogenics expert? Well, at least he got to make lots of ice puns. After “Heart of Ice” revamped the character and gave him a tremendous amount of depth, Batman & Robin definitely did some major back-pedaling. That said, almost 30 years removed, it’s a pretty amusing Arnold performance. And, as with everything else about the movie, there were certainly some cool toys. Let’s look at one of those!
