Review: Iron Slug – Deceit and Misery

Review by Sandre the Giant Released: 27th March 2026 Lurking beneath the grinding, sodden soil of Kent, England comes Iron Slug and their debut full length record ‘Deceit and Misery’. Bringing hefty sludge and doom heaviness to the scene with their previous two EPs, ‘Unrepentant Grin’ and ‘Debauched and Bored’, their debut full length is ready to take their mossy ancient riffs and cavernous atmospheres to new heights. It is out now through Road to Masochist. That cloying, classic sludge intro to the imperious groan of ‘A Calming Turmoil’ is music to my damaged ears, as Iron Slug come dragging and lurching from their lair, bringing with them every EyeHateGod, Iron Monkey and NOLA swamp they can muster. This is beautifully ugly stuff, with a guitar tone that sounds like it is submerged in the La Brea tarpits and yet vocalist Will Raynar has an oddly charismatic croon to his voice. It reminds me of Kirk Windstein, but with a little Neil Fallon or John Garcia in there too. ‘Love Retires…
