Shooting in monochrome (black and white) really forces me to notice those hidden pockets of light, shadow and texture. Those people you see standing apart, somewhat intensly, staring up intently at a corner of ceiling in a public space, or gazing intently at a small patch of foliage amongst a backlot of scrub, or squinting into shopfront windows, or pausing in wide-eyed agog at dust motes in a shaft of sunlight?….well there is all probitility that these people are either practitioners of zen, or batshit crazy, or photographers. Perhaps all three. Within this set and setting, the simplest of objects, the plainest of things transforms into the exceptional. Or perhaps you could say that the catalyst of light, shadow and texture releases the thing to illuminate itself with itself. In these moments, all the details and nuances that are usually missed by the constant visual saccades of our impatient longings are held up wihout narrative or predjudice or explanation, in a wonderous pause.
