Island in Winter Ice

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view of a small island surrounded by ice and open water in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The wooded outcrop holds a mix of conifers and bare deciduous trees, their browns and greens contrasting against the white ice and deep blue of the unfrozen channel. Waterfowl gather along the rocky shoreline and drift across the water, taking advantage of the open passage. Snow blankets the frozen sections, and the elevated perspective reveals the shapes carved by ice and current. The scene documents the transition zone where winter’s grip meets flowing water, a characteristic feature of the St. Lawrence River system.
