Reward and Flow In Designing Your Life the author talks about a rewarding career being full of flow states. As many people have noted, much of modern work seems designed to break flow. Slack updates, minding AI bots and flipping between them as they need attention. Multiple meetings at different points in the day...everything seems to contribute to atomizing your day in such a way that you never get uninterrupted time for flow. I've found AI very useful in getting code shipped to customers. I've been able to ship projects at work that have been sitting for years with a detailed scope and then a day or two of touch-up after the first pass by AI. But I don't get long coding sessions without interruption. I mind bots and review their work. I write little direct code now.
