There’s a men’s barber shop near my house called Cutters; a 1990s sitcom was set in a barber shop sharing space with a women’s salon. There’s a Chicago-based film studio and post-production facility called Cutters. Cutters can refer to various kinds of tools, or a special type of fastball pitch in Baseball, or single-masted sailing ships. Cutters was also, if you recall, the name of the cycling team in the 1979 movie Breaking Away. In the food world–apart from kitchen gadgets like cookie cutters that might fall into the tool category mentioned above–there are different types of cutters as well. Cutters, as we saw a few years ago, refers to a kind of sandwich that is part of the cuisine of Barbados. But elsewhere in the Caribbean, in Trinidad and Tobago, cutters are a kind of drunk finger food, spicy tidbits served at parties and rum shops to help cut the effects of alcohol and keep the drinks flowing.
