In May, I was asked to write a book review of Anna Magdalena Blomley’s 2022 book, A Landscape of Conflict? Rural Fortification in the Argolid (400-146 BC). I hadn’t written a book review for a couple of years and has assumed that I was out of the rotation (there seems in my life to be an inverse relationship between the number of book reviews I am asked to write and the number of manuscript reviews I’m asked to perform. It was pleasant enough to review Blomley’s book which I think I read in 2023 or 2024 and was able to re-read in the service of this review. The book is good and most times a solid book is harder to review than a remarkable or deeply flawed one. Here’s my first effort at a review.
