Every time I pick up my Konica Auto S2, a 35mm fixed-lens rangefinder camera, I’m amused I kept it. That’s because I let go a Canonet QL17 GIII, a camera with cult status. And a Yashica Lynx 14E with a jaw-droppingly good f/1.4 lens. And a Minolta Hi-Matic 7 with controls that felt more luxurious than anything else in its class. I kept the Auto S2 over all of them. I reach for it when I want a classic rangefinder in my hands. It’s the one I trust. First impressions The Auto S2 is a big camera and it has noticeable weight. Yet for its size and heft, it’s not punishing to carry. Strapped across your shoulder for an afternoon of walking, you know it’s there without resenting it. The body is classically handsome and controls are laid out as you would expect. The aperture ring doubles as the mode selector — twist it to Auto for shutter-priority autoexposure, or dial in a specific f stop for manual control.
