This is a response to James Zhan’s blog post about pros and cons of having a comment section on a personal blog. The purpose of your blog Having a comment section depends on the purpose of your blog and what you want to get out of it. If your blog is a space to have conversations and you want to interact with readers, then a comment section is a great feature to have. If your blog is a writing outlet for you and you don’t necessarily care about interactions, then you don’t need a comment section. In the 20+ years that I’ve had a blog, sometimes I have had a comment section and sometimes I haven’t. It depended on the platform I was on and if comments were built in, but I was fine either way. My blog is primarily a place for me to write, so I don’t need to have comments. Contact over Comments Aside from a comment section, I think it’s more important to have a way for people to contact you. That could be a contact form, “Reply by email” functionality, or linking to your social media…
