I remember being struck by this idea that Thomas Cromwell was both incredibly powerful, and also how contingent all that was on being useful to the king (and what happened when he no longer was). Put another way, the dynamic you're describing here is very pre-modern, and when I look at today's oligarchs, I definitely believe that they very much want to go back to a medieval world, where society is a pyramid with a very select few at the apex. The triumph of the expansion of a middle class, after all, was that one could have security and freedom without having to attach oneself to a powerful patron. We see that eroding these days -- security and freedom increasingly means needing more money. Needing more money means making rich people happy. Making rich people happy means, as you note, making oneself useful to them. I hope we turn this around sooner rather than later, as I'm no landed gentry, and don't see a good future in that direction.
