Still thinking about Sony ceasing physical discs 0 ▲ What's up with James? 1 hour ago · Tech · hide · 0 comments Last week Sony announced that from January 2028 they will no longer be producing physical discs for PlayStation games. In some ways this announcement isn't a completely unexpected surprise. Videogame consoles have become increasingly digital focused over the past decade. Partly out of players choice (digital can be convenient) and console manufacturers increasingly nudging consumption habits in that direction too. I had already assumed that the PS6 would not come with a disc drive. This was based on the PS5 Pro not coming with one. But, I also assumed that it too would have an optional disc drive that could be purchased (or ideally use the same one that works with the PS5 Pro and digital models). Now we still have no idea what Sony will actually offer for the PS6. Even though many of us have fairly sizeable digital PlayStation libraries, there are those who have sufficient physical libraries, possibly more so from the PS4 generation.
