As any self-hoster would tell you, having a way to access servers running on your home network from the outside world is a must. This explains why services like Tailscale, Zerotier, et al. enjoy popularity with the self-hosting community. Most self-hosters would also tell you that while these and other similar solutions are useful, they are not without drawbacks. The most obvious one is the fact that they offer a service that you have no control over—and being in full control of your infrastructure and software is why most choose the self-hosting route in the first place. Quite a conundrum, in other words.
