There is a certain type of anime which I despise. I've just learned it has a name - battle of wits. The constant monologues, the constant plots, the genius characters. How will A outwit B? Let's see how it happens and then spend 10 minutes explaining. But what?! B knew it all along, and created a cross-trap. Orb, Kaji, Code Geass or Death Note. Great idea (sans Kaji), terrible execution. From 0 to self-parody in one episode. This is often catalogued as psychological anime, so I'll steer away. I've watched quite a lot of anime over the years, and I mostly enjoyed it. But this alone makes me hate the genre. Just thinking that I can get so disappointed makes me wary of starting to watch anything new. Until today I just thought that it is lazy writing, as there are ways to show the same scene in a much smarter way. Legend of Galactic Heroes or Monster are basically the same, but the narration is miles ahead. Less theatrics, less hiding information from the viewer, and twists push the plot…
