For anyone who doesn’t follow football, here’s what happened. When the USA played (and beat) Bosnia and Herzegovina on 1 July, their striker Folarin Balogun was sent off for a foul on Tarik Muharemović. Players sent off are automatically suspended for the next match. Donald Trump then got on the phone to FIFA, football’s notoriously corrupt governing body, and persuaded them to make a special case. They did so — without giving any reasoning. Balogun was, unprecedentedly, available to play against Belgium last night, the manager picked him and he played. And Belgium kicked the USA’s butts, winning comfortably by four goals to one — to widespread global celebration.
