A gripping story, massively enhanced by the superb performance of the narrator Kathleen Early who puts on some great accents and a huge amount of passion that really drags you into the story (although I was sometimes “taken out of it” every time one of the cops puts on their “doody” vest). A murder mystery that appears to be a domestic matter when an abused wife seems to be on the verge of leaving, this turns out to have roots deep in the past. During the investigation we also learn more of the history of Emmy’s sister Jude and her childhood (as Martha) and it turns out that the secrets of the title are not just those of the bad guys. A completely convincing tale that really puts you inside the claustrophobia of a town run by the many interlinked descendants of the founding family, but also showing the opportunities that this networking allows for.
