Westerners could learn a lot from how the Japanese approach not just design, but infrastructure, community, and shared responsibilities. It might not come as a surprise, but it was an eye-opening, meaningful, and rewarding trip on many levels — and made it hard to return to our adopted home. It’s a shame that shame that Western companies and governmental priorities are almost entirely driven by efficiency and capitalist ideals, because we all lose out as a result.
