I thought I could only celebrate it when there's finally freedom and justice for all. But growing closer to my faith and witnessing grief, I've learned to accept duality and the importance of appreciating what we do have. I will say... it's not easy being a Latina who chooses to observe this holiday. Actually, I don’t openly do it. Because while it would be acceptable for me to wear a Cowboy Carter sash, it's somehow become frowned upon to rep the American flag -- at least on social media and around my friends and followers.
