In 1970s America, a budding actress (Anna Kendrick) gets told by her agent to go on a dating show to help further her career. One of the male contestants (Daniel Zovatto) is a serial killer who murders young women. It reads like fiction but this is a true story. Fortunately the lady on the dating show didn’t go out with him in the end because she thought he was a creep. Because this is Netflix and it’s true crime there is some time spent on the killer and his methods, but actually to my surprise what this film really wants to talk about are the effects of systemic misogyny on society. It’s cut together in a non-linear way which not only makes for a compelling thriller but also highlights the extent to which we allow horrible events to repeat themselves in spite of many warnings. Daniel Zovatto gives a suitably unnerving performance, and Kendrick goes a great job in her first time as a director. There’s a scene in a car park where she gets followed by… No comments yet.
