“Spacious Heart” is the solo debut from L.A.-based musician Anthony Calonico. Signed to Amsterdam’s Music From Memory, he previously appeared on the label as part of the trio Total Blue. The new 8-track set is split equally between instrumentals and songs. The music has the feel of floating, fluttering, weightless fusion – check the appropriately titled “Ether”. A syncopation of hushed, brushed cymbals, and delicate drum programming, carrying treated textures created from fragile, gentle guitar work and careful keys. The bass, fretless. “Baka Dom”, for example, is softly swinging, finger-snapping. The equally jazzy, “Hillside” recalls label mates The Zenmenn and Gaussian Curve. “Who Am I” is a thoughtful piano showcase. The songs display polished, sophisticated chops.
