Biology lesson at Lister Road

The plan this morning was to give a Biology lesson to Year 12 students at Rednock School on Riverfly. We did the same thing last year, so we have a well practised routine which can be delivered within the double period allocated. Before heading into the school, I went down to the site to check the vegetation and access for the students. The usual way in to the site was completely impassable and I had no chance of clearing the path with just a pair of loppers. So I investigated the alternate route which, while very steep, was much easier to access the river itself.Tony and I then met with the students in the classroom first for an initial briefing, and then we headed down to the river. They divided into four groups and after a quick demonstration they chose different parts of the river to do a kick and hand sample according to the methodology. We then took the buckets back to the science lab and spent the second period doing ID of the species and recording the counts and scores found.…
