A universe of ideas

I heard an interview with Ivan Novak from the Slovenian band Laibach. When they talked about creation, Ivan explained that they didn’t really believe in the concept of originality. He said that it’s not like we’re taking something from an empty space but rather, as he put it: “The vast universe of ideas that happened before us.” I think that’s such a beautiful and true way to put it. A universe of ideas floating around, available for anyone to pick up and piece together in their own way. A creator, as in its Latin origin creatus, meaning to “bring forth” or “cause to grow”. A gardener that causes the seeds of ideas to grow.
