Easy though it is – especially as a grumpy old fucker – to shout at the moon about how bad everything is and how much better it used to be in the old days – I’m firmly of the belief that actually, at the heart of it, people are generally pretty nice people. When you face them, talk to them, interact with them, that is. When you say hi or ask for help or end up lost or don’t have any change or need a push in your broken down car – people, they’re alright. The thing is (here it comes), we’re increasingly being pushed – and pushing ourselves – into a sort of isolated digital backwater. This post has been brewing for a while – and then when I saw The AirPods Effect I thought, yeh, there’s another one – and finally I managed to push this half-formed mewling ugly out into the world. The wider negative implication of digital, particularly mobile devices, social media, all of that, is written about so widely it’s not worth spending too much time digging into it.
