The inevitable end came on Monday morning, when Keir Starmer resigned as leader of the Labour Party and as Prime Minister of the UK, saying he’ll stay in office until the party decides a new leader. Andy Burnham, former mayor of Manchester and winner of the Makerfield by-election last week, was sworn in as a new MP the same day, and is expected to become the next party leader and prime minister. Wes Streeting decided not to follow through on his intention to stand for leader. I posted about the news to Metafilter within half an hour of Starmer’s announcement, but the resulting thread has been surprisingly quiet, garnering fewer comments than one about the Trump cabinet’s obsession with sauerkraut.
