On this day (24 June) in 1724, Johann Sebastian Bach led the first performance of his Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (“Christ our Lord came to the Jordan”, BWV 7), the third cantata of his chorale cantata cycle, at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig. Bach had composed this great work to commemorate Johannistag, the Nativity of John the Baptist, which is celebrated on this day.
