There have been several articles of late in ‘Le Monde’, attempting to re-assess the fate of historian grandee March Bloch, his huge contribution to our understanding of culture, history. Along with Lucien Febvre he established the hugely important Annales School of French Social History. As a Jewish academic he experienced the seep of antisemitism’s revitalisation as it spread through all levels of society from the German regime. He was executed in 1944. There is a very assessment of this in ‘Marc Bloch was persecuted not only by the Nazi occupiers, but also by the French state‘ by Alya Algen, in L Monde https://www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/article/2026/06/23/marc-bloch-was-persecuted-not-only-by-the-nazi-occupiers-but-also-by-the-french-state_6754774_23.html Today’s edition covers the investiture of Marc Bloch and his wife into the French elite with a lying in state. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2026/06/24/french-resistance-fighter-marc-bloch-inducted-into-pantheon-in-movin…
