I restarted my reading habit in April 2025 when I bought a Kindle. This year, I’ve read 11 books and I’m currently on a 49 week streak that I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I even replaced Threads and Instagram on my home screen with the Kindle app and FreshRSS last week hoping to read more and scroll less. One thing I’ve noticed that discourages me while I’m reading is Kindle’s estimated read time. Every time I read, I see it in the bottom left corner of the screen and it makes me feel like reading is a wasted effort, because I look at the estimated read time on the left and I think to myself: “At this rate, I’m not finishing this book anytime soon.” On the days where I didn’t find it discouraging, it would feel like a challenge to speed-run books and prove the estimate wrong. Today, I started reading Theo of Golden by Allen Levi and its a slower paced book that The Expanse series that I’ve been reading recently, but I don’t want to speed-run this book. I want to enjoy it.
