My dad looks so much like my pawpaw. which makes sense because that's his dad. duh. But like, the genes in my pawpaw's family line are SOOOOOOOOOO STRONG. Like, on one hand, it's a blessing to have people in my family who are still alive and remember the intricacies of my family tree. I'm 2-3 generations removed from sharecroppers, so it's been really hard to archive my family tree, but thanks to my living family members, they remind me that we also come from entrepreneurs, chefs, philanthropists, gardeners, caretakes and engineers. All these great roles make me beam with pride when I think about my family. But it's so striking to look at my great-great-granddad, my great-grandad, my pawpaw, my dad, and my uncle and see the same face. My grandfathers may be gone, but I will never forget them, for I see their faces in my own reflection. Pawpaw, I miss you, and I hope you're enjoying heaven. Dad, I love you. Happy Father's Day.
