I don't know why I'm like this, but being unable to edit messages when I'm writing something more than a simple message/reply drives me insane. The Old Days Letters. Book reports. Papers. All of these drove me a bit insane because I can't come back to what I wrote and refine it after it leaves my possession. Was I lazy and doing my homework at the last moment, or was I trying to get it right up to the last second? A bit of both I suppose... Early Internet IRC wasn't so bad because the message length is kind of limited except when clients started automaticaly splitting, but the conversations there aren't super serious. Unless there's a logger bot in the channel, it's somewhat ephemeral. This is probably why IRC didn't really bother me. Before I had access to IRC I was using AOL chatrooms on my sister's AOL connection. That was also anonymous/ephemeral so it wasn't a big deal.
