You may recall that about a year ago I decided it was time for a change and I set about replacing W8MHB, a call sign I had used for almost 28 years. I successfully applied for and received a Group A 2×2, AI5MX. Since then, I found that I wasn’t loving it as much as I thought I would. It wasn’t so much dissatisfaction or dislike as it as just a sort of meh feeling. For a long time, I thought that W8MB was the only Group A call sign I’d be willing to accept as a replacement for W8MHB.[^window] As the June date of its availablity approached, I started mulling the idea of changing call signs again. There are two reasons why I was discouraged in the past from applying for a 2×1 or (especially) 1×2 call sign. First, there’s always so much competition. The odds are better than the lottery, but it’s still often random chance as to whether you’ll get a particular call. Second, some of those calls are not just used, but very well used.
