A year of reading the Tales and Teachings from the Bhagavata Purana One year ago, I started reading Bhakti Yoga, Tales and Teachings from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa by Edwin Bryant. I picked it up because I absolutely love his book on the Yoga Sūtras and after reading the Bhagavad Gītā, I wanted to learn more about bhakti yoga. This book provides a relatively “safe” way for me to explore these concepts: it’s approach is somewhat academic. To cut to the chase: I was not disappointed, this is an excellent introduction to bhakti yoga, provided you’re a bit academically minded: there are lots of footnotes and technical terms, and philosophical concepts to dive into. A brief aside: this post will be mostly about the book itself; I’ll write separately about my own ongoing exploration of faith in a later post. The gist of it is that I’m still mostly agnostic, but very much attracted to the ideas presented in this book. As much as I’d love to, I have too many open questions to fully commit to…
