As we begin reading The Violence: My Family’s Columbian War, I’d love for us to talk about how Ramirez weaves together family and political histories. What are your first impressions of Esther? In what ways does specific, personal narrative help us understand historical events that a regular history cannot? If you were attempting to write your own family history, whose perspective do you think would be the most revealing? Who would you interview? Are there any family legends/stories/grudges that change depending on who’s telling them? Who’s version of events do you trust the most?
