Karmelo Anthony got 35 years in prison for the murder of Austin Metcalf. This case and so many others would have a different result if the races were flipped. A white boy is cornered by a Black boy and his friends who are telling him to leave the track meet they're all attending. He tells them to leave him alone, to back off. He says "touch me and see what happens," reaching into his backpack. The Black boys persist. One of them pushes the white boy, and in response is stabbed in the chest. What's the likelihood that the white boy in this scenario would receive a sentence of 35 years in prison? Very low. How likely is it that they'd get by with an all-Black jury to convict? Not a chance. But we routinely find all-white juries to convict Black men. Kyle Rittenhouse killed three people with a gun he'd carried across state lines to defend property that wasn't his.
