Beck - KOME-FM, San Jose, California, June 17, 1996Today in the “wanna feel old” department … Beck’s Odelay was released jussssst about 30 years ago! Sheesh. It’s possible I’m misremembering, but I think this compact disc came out on the last day of my junior year of high school. The jigsaw jazz and the get-fresh flow! I think I went over to my buddy Sean’s to give it a listen, and though Sean was more of a fan than I was, Odelay was undeniable, just an extremely fun record to dig into and decode. Or to just drive around the Los Angeles area that summer with it blasting out your window. Whatever you might think of it now, you gotta admit it that it remains a very LA record. An Ode to LA, perhaps? The day before Odelay, Beck was making his way back home after playing one of those Free Tibet concerts in the Bay Area. But before he hit LA, he stopped in for a very brief radio appearance in San Jose. I initially sought this recording out because I wanted to hear Beck’s folkie arrangement…
