π‘ TLDR: My 20+ year-old WordPress wp-content directory was a complete mess. After many failed attempts to clean it up, I finally managed to do so. I've written before about the mess that is my WordPress /wpcontent folder on my daily blog. This WordPress installation is 20+ years old. I made some bad decisions and was not always completely aware of how WordPress handled images, which also changed over the years. In that post I describe what I do now to make sure no extra -- unneeded -- images are created. The two main tweaks (i.e. plugins) I use are the following: Disable Generate Thumbnails: so no new thumbs are created, ever. EVER! Imsanity plugin: Uploaded images are automatically scaled down on upload and more. This works pretty well. No more extra or large images! However, I am left with lots an lots of old images of different sizes, from before I used this setup. Most of these images aren't used. And this bothered me more than I can put into words.
