Look I read five more books. Mind of My Mind is the second book in Octavia Butler’s Patternist series. Eariler this year I read Octavia’s Brood, a collections of science fiction stories from the social justice movement inspired by Octavia Butler (the name of the book comes from Lilith’s Brood, another of Butler’s works). In those stories was also an essay about the history of Octavia Butler’s writing and I decided I needed to extend my knowledge of her works beyond Parable of the Sower. I picked up the first book in the Patternist series, Wild Seed, and I was hooked. The story centers around beings with mental abilities (telepathy, self-healing, telekinesis, etc.) and the society that one of the more powerful beings, Doro, has created. It’s basically the X-men, but with even more social justice overtones. My biggest problem with it is probably the word patternist – because it is meant to imply a pattern of minds coming together and it just feels like she really didn’t want to say…
