The idea that AI systems can be used to build better AI systems, creating a feedback loop that could quickly accelerate the amount of human work that an AI can complete autonomously and more or less reliably, does inevitably make us worry. If we don’t understand what it is they are doing, how do we know that what they’re doing is OK? Are they going to take over the world? Have we missed the opportunity to insert Asimov’s First Law of Robotics — “A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm”? In March Ethan Mollick wrote The Shape of the Thing, an examination of progress on AIs, and speculates on the next leap forward.
