Markdown makes it easy to format and structure text. I'm a big fan and use it wherever I can. But how did Markdown actually come about? To me, it always feels like Markdown has always been around, but of course, someone1 actually came up with this thing at some point. We've come a long way from something that felt like only developers used. Markdown is used everywhere these days. Well-known tools like Obsidian or CMSs like Kirby rely on Markdown; and even the whole "AI" automation is largely based on Markdown files – which still drives me crazy, but that's a different story. How it all came about and what makes Markdown so special can be heard in this episode of The Vergecast. John Gruber and Anil Dash are featured. John Gruber, to be specific ↩
