I’m afraid nuclear weapons are here to stay. There’s no point resisting. I’m afraid assault weapons and school shootings in the US are here to stay. I’m afraid cars are here to stay. Corporate social media, I imagine, is also here to stay? Addiction-honed algorithms, and constantly expanding surveillance – on and offline? To quote one Marx or another: I’m against it. We too easily conflate “this is not going away” (whatever that means) with “there’s no point resisting” It seems to me like the reverse is true. The longer something harmful has-been or will-be around, the more resistance is essential in limiting that harm. In fact, if you are interested in keeping something around despite the well-documented harms – maybe you ought to be right out front in doing that resistance work. My job as a designer/developer is not to hype new tech, but to carefully protect my communities against it’s mis-use. Reply via Email | Mastodon | Bluesky
