There’s a longstanding criticism of Buddhism in the West as McMindfulness™, a watered-down and commodified version of the real thing. And it’s certainly disheartening to see how few Buddhist groups charge nothing for the teachings and look like little more than New Age inspired money-making schemes. Apparently the same has happened to Christianity, as described in The Commodification Of Christianity. The subtitle is a fitting summary: “It’s another thing to do on my phone”. And it’s all rather sad because there is something very real and otherworldly at the heart of many spiritual traditions, but you’ll never find it through an app or something convenient. It takes years of dedication, struggle, ups and downs, and then it clicks.
