I recently gave a talk at a doctoral school in Belgium about alternatives to Big Tech software: do they exist, where are they, and how to find them? I figured it might be useful to other people as well, so I'm sharing the presentation here. There are a myriad reasons to opt out of Big Tech: ethics, privacy, security, etc. I'm not going to dive into these reasons here. This presentation is based primarily on my own journey in disentangling myself from Big Tech (and/or US-based software, 'AI', privacy-invasive software, etc.), supported by lots of research. However, the criteria, in the end, are subjective. See this as a springboard for your own journey. The presentation includes possible criteria for your software choices, places to look for alternative software, and examples of alternatives. As this was given to an audience of doctoral students, the examples are geared towards researchers/students. The presentationDownload the presentation as PDF here. Or check it out below:…
