In response to In the Battle for Attention I want to start with that I generally agree with this post, however I want to espouse some positivity aswell. Currently there is a strong growth in the indie web. More blogs are being created than are currently dying, and not only that; there is genuine enthusiasm for this old-new vision of the internet. This enthusiasm isn't just skin deep either, I regularly corespond via email about both mine and other peoples posts. There isn't the same culture of building a larger than life image here, people are genuinely interested in what other people think and do. It's also easier than ever to participate, not only via email, but by hosting your own blog. Honest blogging platforms like bear are trivially easy to use, and with some technical knowhow you can easily self host (even for free). Discovery is easy via bubbles or bears discovery feature.
