Pierre-Yves Martel - Weird Studies Vol. 3I’ve been a longtime fan of the Weird Studies podcast — an illuminating program that sometimes surpasses my understanding (still haven’t gotten around to reading Deleuze), but is always a good time. Since the beginning, Weird Studies has been bolstered by its supremely moody soundtrack, created by Pierre-Yves Martel. On the third Weird Studies release, Martel is joined by an array of heavy collaborators: Sarah Davachi, Ben Chasny and Joel Plaskett among them. Martel and co. take things in a lot of directions over the course of 11 ominous tracks; there’s delicate chamber folk, disquieting ambient, Roadhouse-ready doom metal, modern classical strangeness. But it all draws the listener into an utterly Weird, utterly beguiling state of consciousness, scoring your dreams, nightmares and all points in between.
