Prior to this year I could not have told you what a broccoli plant looks like. It turns out it’s mostly dark, abundant leaves. They first rivaled and have now surpassed the kale for the crown of our leafiest plant. The challenge, as we’ve learned, is that it’s all ready at once. We’ve ramped up our intake to, “A broccoli a day keeps the guilt of over-production away” levels and still need to harvest and freeze a bunch this week. Same goes for the kale, for which we have invested in a salad spinner. Oh what counts for excitement in the countryside. Our rainy spring has turned into a rainy and cold early summer. A patch of the property is, in theory, a flower garden. To this point that’s meant increasingly large bunches of boring green shrubs. But, progress! We have daisies! Lots and lots of daisies. They arrived just in time, too, as our skepticism of this flower garden had reached a point where we had started to talk about replacing it with a pergola and small patio. Perhaps the rest…
