First of all, the whole gravestone story was great. Peak comedy right there. I also love how the development timeline of COBOL is kind of a microcosm of all the things that can go horribly wrong with Enterprise™®© software. It soon became apparent that the committee was too large to make any further progress quickly. A frustrated Howard Bromberg bought a $15 tombstone (in 1959; equivalent to roughly $170 now) with "COBOL" engraved on it and sent it to Charles Phillips to demonstrate his displeasure.
