Most appliances are built with a single power input, which makes for a slight annoyance if you have multiple sources of power and want things to simply keep running seamlessly when the power goes out. You could use a UPS or power station to “tie over” the equipment between manual transitions between sources, but this requires someone to be in attendance. In some cases, you might even have some appliances you want to run from a power station, falling back to the mains when it runs out, or from several power stations. The automatic transfer switch, or ATS for short, is a device that takes two power sources and selects between them based on whether power is available.
