Tl;dr: it would be really good to get some feedback on the future direction of this blog… “It seemed like a good idea at the time”. I have sometimes reflected that this is one possible epitaph for my academic career, if not my life (which has been largely quite sensible and risk-averse), given the rather butterfly-like path of random dabbling it has involved. It has meant trying out different things just because they seemed interesting, and taking up opportunities just because they presented themselves; it has also meant getting regularly over-committed and having a brain that’s all over the place. And I suppose that one thing I ought to have learnt – or at least have learnt, even if I don’t always stick to it – is to avoid the sunk cost fallacy; don’t get over-committed to things that aren’t working, or are working but look iffy for the future, or are working but have ceased to bring joy. I write this blog for myself, and if anyone else likes it that’s a bonus, as the old rock group…
