When I wrote the previous post, the Neon Odyssey kickstarter was still on-going, but 3500 people had already backed at the top $999 tier. By the time it finished, the campaign raised more than $16M and broke the TTRPG crowdfunding record. This was on the heels of the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG campaign bringing in $13M. These whale-heavy campaigns are certainly making a big splash, so I wondered what we can learn from these campaigns and what they suggest for the future. Additionally, in the previous analysis I looked at just the the single highest priced “whale” tier. However, many crowdfunding campaigns (including these recent ones) have multiple expensive tiers, and may be getting a big chunk of their money from these tiers. My goal in this post is to look at the full set of tiers for the biggest funding campaigns to get a more complete picture of how these high priced tiers targeting…
